Journal Blog #3: Describe the Debate.

Before examining any issue, it is important to understand why it is an issue in the first place. We can usually see where our bias falls, on one side or another; however, it is often difficult to see or understand the other side of the debate if we don't take the time to educate ourselves about others' experiences.

In our class, we are working on summarizing the issue of damming the Mekong river. You all noted the possible economic advantages for a poor and developing region. However, you also noted the environmental and cultural impact it may have to the local peoples. Two examples from the previous blog were highlighted. It is your job to break those examples down and put them into your own words. This is in order to describe the debate.

For this post, you are allowed to work with a partner. Please post your best summary of the highlighted examples that were handed out to you in class. The better posts will be reviewed in our next class together.

Remember to include your ID#s in your post. Aj. M

Mekong river is very important to the 6 countries, and China has been already developing dams upper river that negatively impacted people living around the river. Lao's Xayaburi dam has been constructed to supply the country economic problem. Although they are trying to solve the nation's issue, they bring more problems to the local scale economy. Fish and water are the main sources for food. The dam created a barrier for fish to swim up and down. The river caused interruption to the ecosystem. For example, Irrawaddy Dolphin including other edible fish has dramatically decreased in number of fewer food to the locals. Moreover, the dam impacts the water shortage to the stream. This has caused problems to the farmers to be unable to grow the crops to improve country's GDP. Therefore, the dam has been affecting both economy and ecology in that area.

The Mekong River is very important to the people that live alongside the river, thinking that it should be left untouched, however, the few think that the river should be used for generating electricity.

The people who live along the river depend on it for food (fish) and water (farming). Tourism and the wildlife also depend on the river. For example, the Irrawaddy dolphin is an important part of Cambodian culture.

Building the dam can affect countries’ GDP, as their main sources of income are fish (Cambodia) and rice (Vietnam). The dam would create barriers for fish migration and the deterioration of sediment quality. The fish migration is a large determinant of the fish population and if the population plunges, the fishing industry would take the brunt of the costs. Sediment quality determines the quality of crops which can significantly affect farmers’ harvest and income.

It is also believed that only the rich would benefit from the dam, thus increasing the divide between the rich and the poor.

In summary, governments should perhaps reconsider building the dams after seeing the perspective of the people who depend on the Mekong River, not only will the population and economy be affected but also the wildlife and culture that was built within the lifetime of the Mekong River.

The Mekong river is the most important river to the country around there. Some people might think that developing country by building dam to create more electricity for using in the future will give us more advantage. However, building xayaburi dam can cause the most influence dam project. Firstly, it nigh be affect on environment and supply resources, and people will have limited source and water supply to consume in the future. Moreover, fishes and dolphin are affected by building dam, any fishes will easily extinct. From this reason, the domestic income will be decrease because the main income is come from selling fishes. Furthermore, Southeast Asia is influenced in many ways which include economy, environment, their population. Finally, this can cause the inequality between rich and poor people that rich people will become richer, but poor people will become poorer.

Mekong River is one of the most influential rivers in ASEAN. However, the dam building project negatively affects a lot of fish and people’s culture. Since Cambodian people respect an Irrawaddy dolphin, and it might be extinct from the dam. Local people might also lose they believe if it was gone. The barrier limits the water supply for agriculture and transportation feature. Building dam also increases the gap between poor and rich people. For instance, if Cambodia builds the dam, its GDP tend to be lower, since the main income of Cambodians is from fishing.

The Mekong River plays a crucial role in South East Asian countries in different ways even though it provides numerous drawbacks to people's lives due to the dam project. The dam produces electricity for people to use in their lives. However, it provides negative impacts to people's lives. For instance, decreasing in fish population and quality of agricultural output which is the main food sources and income for people. Therefore, GDP Is likely to be lower. Moreover, it affects local people culture as Cambodians will lose their belief due to fisheries extinction. In addition, rich will gain more benefits and
it may cause a huge gap due to inequality.

Mekong river is paramount toward the nation that it touches. Xayaburi dam is one of the most influential dam project located at the lower half of the Mekong river. But it has negatively affected the lives of many. Recently, they are considering of building a dam for electricity. It would destroy the habitat of fishes and dolphin, which is a type of fish that Cambodians adore. Mekong river provides abundant food resources, water supplies for crops, and also reduces the agriculture rate and GDP of the country. If the dam were to be built, it would reduce the amount of food drastically. Tourism would became harder with less attractions. With an already existed Chinese dam, we had experienced a declining economy and ecology and more countries GDP would be deducted further. With limited agriculture and food resource, it would destroy a huge amount of jobs for the concerning countries. Therefore, creating a larger gap between the rich and the poor by rewarding the rich and stealing from the poor.

The Mekong river is the major food resource for people, and the inhabitant around the river use this river to create their jobs which are agriculture and fishing.

Some countries: Cambodia and Vietnam lost GDP. To illustrate, building dams causes a plenty kind of fish cannot swim across the dams in order to extinct in Cambodia. Also, constructing dams in Vietnam generates the lessening of the water quality, so Vietnamese around the river will cannot grow rice for selling.

Additionally, in China built dams make much more extremely bad repercussions; especially, people's life, economy and ecosystem.

We think that putting more dams might has down sides to the countries in Southeast Asia widely due to the fact that inhabitants use this river for livelihood.

    Section 7

Mekong river runs through many countries in Southeast Asia. The purpose is to generate electricity. However, the dissentient side argues that the dam affects people in three ways including economic, ecology, and people’s life. Economically, these countries receive income from fishery, tourism, and agriculture. Fishery is the main income in country like Cambodia, but due to the structure of a dam, it makes it harder for fish to move including the dolphins(highlight of Cambodia) which prone to be extinct at the end. From this extinction, it causes the difficulties of people’s living especially livelihood. Vietnam is the second exporter of rice. The construction of the dam affects the sediment of rice resulting in the unstandardized quality of rice. It will not be able to export. If the government builds the dam, the income from fishery, tourism, and agriculture will decrease. For the agriculture, this construction has limited water supply ,resulting water’s need for agriculture is inadequate. The expansion of dam also affects people’s culture ,in Cambodian, they respect Irrawaddy dolphin as a holy thing. If it extincts, people will be lose their faith and beliefs.

Building dams on the Mekong River have lots of side effects. People may detrimentally get affected by dams as dams cause fishes to migrate and eventually reduce fishermen' catches, so they will suffer from the limited of food resources. Dams let the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Furthermore, fishes are able to face extinction due to dams block their freedom. By building dams on the Mekong River, some countries may have to encounter economic consequences. Cambodia and Vietnam may lose a huge number of GDP as their prime income comes from agriculture; tourism may also get affected because there will be a limited capability to transport around the river.

The Xaiyaburi Dam was one of the most influential dam project to the lower half of the Mekong River region because of electricity production. But on the other hand the dam has cause many harmful effect on the region. The Mekong river is the most important food source for local people because of the abundance supplies of fish that the river has give. With the dam blocking the flow of the river causing the fish to unable to swim in and out of the dam and might lead to extinction. The dam also limits the water supply for agriculture causing local to have hard time growing crops. The Mekong river is also one of the made source of income of local people. One of the main business of the local is fishing industry and the dam are causing the fish to be extinct. This can cause the GDP of some country such as Cambodia and Vietnam to fall because their main income are from selling fish. Other source of income of many south east asia countries is rice and as the statement from above build the dam can cause difficulty in growing rice causing even more damage to the economy. The last aspect of the economy that get affected by the dam is tourism because of the dam Mekong river is more polluted and the number of tourist are decline because the river is not beautiful anymore. In the end even though Xaiyaburi Dam is use to this power modern asia but it will also bring more harm to exchange with the power we got.

The Mekong river is important in Southeast Asia region. People use this river as a water resource for food. Building dams will reduce the amount of water and become insufficient for agriculture and fishery. In terms of environment, reducing the amount of water flow in the Mekong river affect the amount of marine species. There are several secondary effects of building dams across the Mekong river. Building dams revealed the separation between the rich and the poor, destruct people beliefs, and decrease the amount money from fishery and tourism.

  13. Construcing dams along the Mekong river blocks water flow, which causes extinction of fish as well as ruins fishery industry in Southeast asian countries. The upper class tends to be the majority of gaining benefit from the dams. Meanwhile, middle class and lower class who rely on the Mekong river risk to encounter unemployment. On the other hand, some of the students who I discussed with gave a possible solution to the water flow issue. By remain the dams and tackle the water flow problem, building the extened path for river flow. However, no government currently come up any solid solution yet.
